ABOUT US
At a time when the Bank Employees were labouring from dawn to dusk for a pittance of wages, with the
Damocles’ sword of job insecurity and official repression hanging over their heads, a few courageous and
determined Indian workers of the then Imperial Bank of India chose to hallenge the powerful fortress of
the Imperialistic Management by lighting the torch of Trade Union conscience that resulted in emergence
of a strong trade union in Madras.
We have been actively associating and involving in the Trade Union movement in Chennai Circle of the
Bank under STATE BANKS’ STAFF UNION (MADRAS CIRCLE) since its formation on 4th August 1946. In fact our
veteran leader late Com. M. V. Alexander was one of the founder leaders of the Madras Circle Union and
the All India State Bank of India Staff Federation.
Being militant and proud members for over a period of 54 years in Chennai Circle Union, we have formed a
separate Circle Union on 2nd October 2000, when clearance was received on our long cherished demand of
establishing a separate Circle in Kerala.
The Trade Union culture imparted to us during our association with Chennai Circle Union was tremendous
and helpful to the newly born STATE BANKS’ STAFF UNION, KERALA CIRCLE.
We have a rich heritage of struggles and sacrifices, trials and tribulations. The vision of our union is
to have a strong, healthy, independent trade union of workers in the Bank, which will be “for the
workers, of the workers and by the workers”.
STATE BANKS’ STAFF UNION, KERALA CIRCLE was given affiliation by All India State Bank of India Staff
Federation at Puri Council Meeting of November 2000. The Circle Union Office was inaugurated by our
beloved late Com.M.V.Alexander on 25th November 2000 in the presence of former State Secretary, late
Com.A.P.Gopalakrishnan, Chennai Circle General Secretary, Com.D.Venugopal Reddy and President Com. H.
Ganapathy. The meeting was also attended by General Secretaries/ Presidents from different Circle Unions
and. The Circle Union is committed to the welfare of its entire dedicated militant and enlightened
members in the State and is one of the strongest limbs of All India State Bank of India Staff
